Project Stella

For the second consecutive year, we will be raising money for Project Stella. This is a unique initiative at Fred Hutch Cancer Center focused on developing targeted treatments for an aggressive form of Acute Myeloid Leukemia called AML-RAM/CBF-GLIS. Last year we were fortunate enough to meet one of the families with a little girl whom Project Stella has miraculously helped. It was a very special and memorable day in our chapter so we hold Project Stella very near and dear to our hearts. Only about 4 percent of the money the government spends annually on cancer research is directed toward treating childhood cancer so any donation is greatly appreciated.

The Challenge

Called the 4x4x48 challenge, 15 members of Beta will attempt to run 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. If you are confused by this, trust me you are not the only one.

So let's start with the 48 hours and work backwards. This means the challenge will start when the members attempt their first run and will end 48 hours later when the members finish their final run.

Now let’s move to the 4 hours. Each run will be attempted at intervals of 4 hours. This means if it starts at noon, then there will be a run at noon, 4 pm, 8 pm, midnight, and so on. This entails waking up at midnight, 4 am, and 8 am not once but twice. Each run takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour so this gives them only about 3-3.5 hours of rest between each run.

Finally, the 4 miles. Each run will be 4 miles. It can be a different run each time as long as it is at least 4 miles.

In total, all 15 members will each have run 48 total miles (almost two marathons) with minimal sleep. There will be a total of 12 runs which means mustering up the energy and willpower to go on a run 12 separate times while being physically and especially mentally exhausted.
