$100k for 100mi in Kathryn's Memory

Kathryn was the definition of living life to the fullest. From cave diving in Belize, to sailing in the Mediterranean, life was always an adventure. We're keeping up that tradition in her honor, and riding the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race to raise money for a cause she cared deeply about.

Everyone who donates will get to "ride with me". I'll be wearing a custom jersey with the names of all the donors, or any person's name whom you'd like to honor with your donation. We'll all be in it together!

Five years ago, with your support for the Kathryn Butler Memorial Foundation, we embarked on a journey to improve the lives of cancer patients by evaluating the impact of adverse financial events on health outcomes. The hypothesis is that economic interventions will have a significant impact on survival for many patients, and we want to prove it with data.

To do this, we teamed up with Dr. Scott Ramsey, a leading health economist at the world-renowned Fred Hutch Cancer Institute and funded a study to understand and quantify the relationship of credit reports and health issue outcomes. The results of this first study are in, and, across a sample of more than 330,000 patients, the study shows that cancer patients are 2-3 times as likely to experience adverse financial events as non-cancer patients.

I am very proud and thankful to announce that the results of this first project funded by KBMF are strong enough to be chosen for a podium speaking presentation at this year's ASCO Annual Meeting, which is the world's leading conference for cancer research. This is no small feat, as there are 10,000's of projects submitted, and only a select few are chosen for this type of presentation.

This first step of the research has shown promising results.  We are excited to now embark on the second stage: quantifying the impacts of these adverse financial events on clinical outcomes. The third stage of the research will be a full clinical trial, measuring the efficacy of economic interventions applied to patient groups in improving treatment decisions, survival, and quality of life.

I cannot fully express the gratitude that I have for all of your support in getting to this point in honor of Kathryn's legacy. If you would like to continue to support this research, feel free to donate on this page.
