Fundraising Honor Roll

2019 Boston Marathon

I recently accepted the challenge to raise funds to support the Climb to Fight Cancer by joining biotech journalist Luke Timmerman and a group of scientists, life sciences investors and executives on a trek to Everest Base Camp in late March 2020. I am honored to be joining Luke in his efforts to support cancer research at Fred Hutch!

Luke’s invitation and challenge to be part of the Climb to Everest Base Camp came at a time of multiple personal challenges.

To characterize 2019 as just a challenging year for me is an understatement. ImmusanT’s nine year journey came to a very unexpected and sudden end for me and my team after our Phase 2b failed to meet its primary endpoint. It was a phenomenal journey with so many lessons learned.

I am devastated we no longer are developing an immunotherapy for patients living with celiac disease and type 1 diabetes; however, I take solace knowing we advanced the scientific foundation, provided new direction and impetus for others to advance the technology.

I also unexpectedly lost my uncle to cancer in 2019. He was the picture of health and within just a few months of diagnosis died of pancreatic cancer. Traditional chemotherapy and radiation didn’t touch the tumor and he was not a surgical candidate. As for most patients with advanced pancreatic cancer at time of diagnosis the current available treatments are ineffective. Not being a burden to his family was my uncle “Deans” main concern, once he was diagnosed and learned the grim prognosis. In addition to my uncle, two close friends were diagnosed with cancer and are in the fight of their life. One with early stage pancreatic cancer found incidentally on an exam. The other with leukemia.

I am passionate about making a difference in the world. Luke’s challenge to participate in the “Everest Climb to Fight Cancer” gives me and my supporters the opportunity to make a difference for not only those directly afflicted by cancer but also for the loved ones who are supportive but helpless bystanders.

Cancer is a devastating disease, estimated to strike one in three women and one in two men in their lifetimes. If you do the statistics, there is over a 50% chance you will either develop cancer or have a loved one develop this devastating affliction. I am climbing to raise vital funds for Fred Hutch’s lifesaving research. You can help by donating to my climb, which will accelerate the quest for cures or early diagnosis.

Fred Hutch has made some of the world’s most important medical advances — from developing bone marrow transplantation as a cure for leukemia, to pioneering powerful therapies that harness the immune system to fight cancer, to leading national and international initiatives that enable earlier cancer diagnoses and more effective treatments. This leading-edge research depends on private contributions that fuel novel studies, which have the power to make a profound difference.

Please make a difference. Don’t be a passive bystander in fighting cancer, lest you end up being a passive bystander in watching this disease devastate a loved one.

Click the “Donate” button and give to the Climb to Fight Cancer. Any amount you can give makes a difference to people and families facing deadly diseases. Your gift is 100 percent tax deductible and will fund extraordinary research, lifesaving discoveries, and cures. Join me in my charge to make a difference.

Thank you for your support!
