Kilimanjaro 2019

About me

Growing up in Jamaica, I was more interested in riding my bike up hills and small mountains vs. hiking them. My introduction to hiking was during grad school, and my first trek was in 2014 where I attempted Mt Meru in Tanzania. I got to ~13,000ft (~4,000m) and turned back as I didn't feel safe with my rented gear. After making it up Little Meru instead, my guide congratulated me and told me to get better gear and go climb Kilimanjaro! I did just that with Luke and team in 2019, where we raised >$1.5M for the Fred Hutch.

I’ve worked in the cancer field for 10+ years in a variety of settings. Initially as a grad student working on immunotherapies, immune-based diagnostics, and transgenic models for ovarian cancer. Then in the business setting first as a strategy consultant, then at Compass Therapeutics, an early-stage biotech company with an immunotherapy pipeline. Most recently I was on the investment team at Atlas Venture, where I worked on company creation as well as with numerous portfolio companies.

I’m currently an Investment Principal at Oxford Sciences Innovation (OSI), an early-stage investment fund who've raised $800M to date for building newcos rooted in Oxford Univerity's technolgies. At OSI, I see numerous innovations in oncology driven by scientific breakthroughs. Conquering a mountain is somewhat synonymous to breakthroughs in cancer – hard work and dedication make the achievements at the bench and bedside that more rewarding.

Why am I doing this?

Over the last few years, several of my family members have succumbed to melanoma, breast and lung cancer. The impact of cancer on our families, friends, and community is immeasurable. So, while we recognize and celebrate our wins at the bench and in the clinic, we must continue the fight against this deadly disease that continues to take the lives of our loved ones.

Supporting institutions like the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is a great way to continue the fight against cancer!
